Midwinter Marathon 2022 is cancelled

In recent months we have made plans to let runners experience three days of running pleasure again. But, COVID-19 is thwarting these plans for the second time. The Centraal Beheer Midwinter Marathon in the first weekend of February has been cancelled. After intensive consultation with the municipality of Apeldoorn and the Safety Region about the necessary COVID-19 measures, the board of the Marathon Apeldoorn Foundation had to conclude, with sorrow, that organizing a full-fledged three-day running event, with approximately 14,500 participants, can not be justified. This means that the Night Run on Friday evening, the Kroondomein Het Loo Marathon on Saturday and all distances on Sunday have been cancelled.
Chairman Frans Mulderij finds it very annoying that the Midwinter Marathon has to be cancelled for the second year in a row. “We have been busy in recent weeks to sort out all possible solutions, but they all did lead tot the same conclusion, being that the continuation of the event can not be justified. And we do not expect the situation to improve, but rather to deteriorate.

Carrying out the Corona check for so many participants, having thousands of runners safely set up at the start on the Loolaan, the practical impossibility of regulating the public along the course, made it to be unrealistic. In addition, we had the feeling that the atmosphere and character of our beautiful event would be taken away too much. We only want to go for a full-fledged event. We sympathize with the disappointed runners who, like us, were looking forward to our winter classic.”

The Organisation has tried to move the event to a weekend in April. Unfortunately, this was not possible due to planned road works on and around the course. And, three major touristic attractions, located along side the course (Julianatoren, Apenheul and Paleis Het Loo) will reopen in April and will cause a lot of car traffic.

Registration fee
The organisation will return the registration fee minus three euro’s before February 1. The participants in the Kidsrun will receive their full registration fee of three euros. The foundation uses the three euros that are withheld from the other distances to cover the costs already incurred so far. The Apeldoorn Marathon Foundation does not receive a government subsidy or compensation from a corona fund for events.
